Tips, tricks, and advice to make your engagement session run smoothly, fun, and efficient!

Nervous about your engagement session? Don’t worry, that’s completely normal, you won’t feel that way for very long! John and I designed this PDF to set you up for pure success for your engagement session. This is a MUST READ!

Question: Typically how long are engagement sessions?

Answer: Expect to spend about 1 to 1.5 hours at your engagement session. Arrive completely dressed and ready at least 10 minutes before your session, so we can start right on time.

Question: How many outfits can we wear at our engagement session?

Answer: We suggest no more than two outfits for our 1.5 hour timeframe. Our couples will usually wear a dressy outfit and a casual outfit, and we spend about 45 minutes in each outfit. Additional outfit changes take time, and that cuts into available daylight, as well as your engagement session time. Additional time can be purchased for engagement sessions, but this will need to be discussed prior to your engagement session date.

Question: What happens if it rains/overcast skies/high winds?

Answer: Short answer, we reschedule. While rescheduling throws a wrench in everyone’s plans, none of us can control the weather, and the last thing we want for you is to pay for images (not to mention, hair and makeup) that you are disappointed in. As you know, we can’t shoot in the rain, so we will be sure to watch the weather closely and contact you with as much notice as possible. Since Memphis weather can sometimes be pretty unpredictable, we ask that you stay flexible if we do have to make the call to reschedule. Be sure to refer to this portion of your contract for more information.

Question: Can we bring our dog(s)?

Answer: ABSOLUTELY! We LOVE when our couples bring their dog(s)! The *only* thing we require when fur babies are involved is that you have another person there with you to help assist with the pet. Pet photos only take about 10 minutes of time, so we always like to do those first. Have someone come to the session for the first 10 minutes, to help get the pet’s attention (with treats, toys, etc) and then after those 10 minutes, have that person leave with your pet!

Question: Can my parent/ friend come hang out with all of us/watch during the session?

Answer: While we love friends and family, we’ve found our couples do better when no one else is hanging around with them, so we kindly ask that you two show up without anyone else!

Question: Can we pick our location for our engagement session?

Answer: Absolutely! We like to make suggestions because we know which locations photograph well, but we’re happy to shoot where you’d like! Keep in mind as your contract mentions, downtown Memphis engagement sessions are an additional $150. Refer to that portion of your contract for more info!

Question: Are we going to have a blast at our engagement session?

Answer: Absolutely, and we cannot wait!

If you like glitter, sequins, confetti, and all things sparkly, Katie is YOUR glass of bubbly. I can’t think of the Kate Spade quote “She had a cocktail in her hand and confetti in her hair” without thinking of Katie

I know typically engagement blogs are about the incredible couple, and I promise to get to that, but I first have to spill my guts about Katie. The first time I met Katie was when she hired us to do a branding shoot for her wedding planning business. She looked like a real life Barbie, and we loved every single thing about her brand. We got to meet her precious mom, and golden doodle, and even got to play with confetti. We have loved Katie since day one. Before Matt and Katie’s engagement session, we got to work with Katie at a giant wedding we photographed last July at Annesdale Mansion. It was one of the largest weddings we’ve ever photographed, and it was also one of the most detailed, and organized weddings we had ever done. Katie handled it flawlessly like the absolute pro she is. John and I were so impressed, but honestly, we’d expect nothing less from this Queen. I mentioned this when I first posted engagement session sneak peeks, but what I love most about Katie is, she knows what she wants. Girls can be indecisive, I struggle with that myself, and I work with hundreds of wonderful ladies who find themselves with the same struggle, not Katie. She’s so confident in herself and in her decisions. I may be a tiny bit older (hold the tiny) but I truly look up to sweet Katie.

We will never get over how special it is to be hired by any person, but there is something so humbling, and so special when someone in the wedding industry asks you to be a part of their big day. John and I celebrated with our own happy dance (and champagne) when Katie inquired with us for she and Matt’s wedding! We were super excited to do Katie + Matt’s engagement session at Annesdale Mansion. This was the first time we met Matt, and he was the perfect, calm compliment to Katie’s bubbly, high energy personality (very similar to John + my relationship!) Matt was the perfect go with the flow groom we love so much.

Since their engagement, Katie and I often cut up via text, and chat about all things weddings. Recently, the four of us got together and Katie and Matt were kind enough to treat us to dinner. Once again, we weren’t surprised because these two are so generous, so kind, and all around wonderful souls.

We cannot wait to photograph AND film Katie + Matt’s wedding NEXT month at The Jefferson. Y’all be sure to leave them some love!

Abbey + Elliot’s rustic Tennessee engagement session is one of our all time favorites! We got to travel to Abbey + Elliot’s home for this session. They live on such a gorgeous property, and we were SO excited we got to meet their horse, Abby. Elliot’s grandpa named the horse years before Abbey was ever in the picture, but he has such great taste, don’t you think? When we arrived Elliot said “wow, I feel like I am meeting celebrities” but John and I know it took less than 10 minutes for these two to realize we’re actually just a couple of dorks.

Abbey + Elliot’s first date was at Premier Bowling Lanes in Oxford, MS. Elliot drove from Memphis to Oxford for their date because Abbey was still in college at Ole Miss at the time. Elliot being the sly, charmer he is, made a bet with Abbey that if he rolled a strike that she would have to kiss him. Let’s just say Elliot did NOT strike out, on their first date, haha!

I asked both Abbey + Elliot what their favorite thing about each other is, and their responses are too good not to share:

Abbey: “There are so many, but If I had to choose just one I would say my favorite things about Elliot is that he is patient, kind, and loving. He has the biggest heart. He respects his family and friends and is always looking out for them. I love that healways makes me feel beautiful and loved everyday. I am so incredibly lucky to have him as my best friend and future husband.”

Elliot: “This question is one of the hardest questions that I have had to try to answer. I’mnot wanting to spend the rest of my life with Abigail just because of one of herhighlights but because of all of her highlights. If I had to choose, my favorite traitthat Abigail portrays is love. She has the biggest heart of any person that I know;she is always thinking of the person beside her instead of herself. My future wifealso knows how to love life and find the joy in it. I could go on for hours explainingher love, but to say the least, Abbey’s love is endless, and I look forward to seeingwhere our love takes us in our future.”

These two were supposed to get married in June, and had to make the very difficult decision to postpone, HOWEVER, they are finally tying the knot THIS weekend and we’re absolutely ecstatic to be photographing and filming it. Y’all leave them some love!

Downtown Memphis engagement sessions are even magical during the colder months, especially when they are of Chelsea + Russ. How adorable are these two?

From the moment Chelsea inquired, John and I KNEW she and Russ were OUR COUPLE. I am so glad we were able to trick them into hiring us, haha! The first time I spoke to Chelsea after she inquired with us, she was actually at Adee’s (our past bride) bachelorette trip. We absolutely loved Adee and Austin and we knew we just couldn’t wait to add Chelsea and Russ to the KGP family.

Chelsea and Russ live downtown, so they spend a lot of their time exploring new restaurants, spending time on their amazing rooftop patio that has an amazing view, and running together down by the river. It made complete and total sense that they do their engagement session downtown, and we had so much fun with them.

Per usual, you know we LOVE asking our couples lots of questions about their relationship. Chelsea and Russ had SO much to say, but we couldn’t help but smile (and giggle) when we read what their favorite things about each other were. Make sure you read the last part. I’m still smirking.

Chelsea: “My favorite thing about Russ is his patience with me. I am a little (very) high-strung and he always seems to bring me back down to earth. He is honestly the most caring, kind-hearted, respectful, and he will enjoy this, wittiest person I have ever met. Russ is so supportive of me in all things. While getting my MBA, I would stay up late doing work before having to wake up early the next day for work, and he would just pause and tell me just how proud he is of me and that meant more than he could ever know.”

Russ:  “My favorite thing about Chelsea is her sense of humor.  She loves making people laugh and can do so effortlessly.  Unintentionally, Chelsea is also a funny person to watch go about her life.  She is clumsy, easily scared and angered, and considers herself a good singer and dancer.  It is adorable and she keeps me laughing whether or not she is trying to.”

“^^^^This is Chelsea: I’m not sure how to take this, but he could have said worse!”

Chelsea and Russ are a FUN couple. Just plain and simple. They are the couple EVERYONE wants at their wedding on the dance floor. (And Russ, we can’t wait to see those dance moves at your wedding Chelsea told us about.)

2020 has been HARD and messy, and rude. I said it. 2020 is rude, but I like what Chelsea said in a recent Instagram post: “I can’t wait to marry you on 9/12/20 Russ! Even if it means we’re all dressed up while drinking White Claws in a backyard and sining to a Karaoke machine ***** says that jokingly, but knows that is my dream wedding.”

^^^ Need I say more?! Needless to say, we CANNOT wait for Chelsea and Russ’ wedding NEXT month at Colonial Country Club!

Enjoy!
